API For Google Docs

Google’s new office applications, Docs & Spreadsheets, will provide APIs for custom apps. Johnathan Rochelle, project manager says they want to build out APIs, especially for the spreadsheets side, as spreadsheets are more data-oriented, but maybe also for the word processor.

Protect Your Photos And More

ProtectMyPhotos , a newly launched service that aims to make the online/offline photo storage and viewing environments seamless.

The Windows desktop client, that you download after registering, automatically syncs folders on your computer with your online storage space and Flickr account, reflecting changes on the desktop online in real time.

Online consumer media storage is a relatively crowded market, with players like Zapr, MyFabrik and Carbonite among others but ProtectMyPhotos is a solid addition to the field. Looking at the ongoing trend, it seems that the consumer interest in this vertical is growing rapidly and a lot more players can still attempt to capture their part of the pie.

So with so many existing players already around where how does ProtectMyPhotos measure up. ProtectMyPhotos scores high in ease of use. The client displays online storage in exactly the same way as your desktop would, complete with hierarchical folders and metadata. It can autodiscover particular folders on your computer that contain media files or can be directed to sync with particular folders on the desktop. Photos can be taken offline and edited, changes will automatically be made online and all previous versions are stored. The company seeks to offer the easiest program for mainstream users to adopt.

Multiple users can be given permission to access accounts and photos and changes can be synced automatically with Flickr accounts. ProtectMyPhotos is currently working on an API that it will provide to other services seeking to automatically sync desktop and online files. The file backup service costs $40 per year for 40 GB per year with additional space available at the same price. That space can be used to backup and sync any type of file, including MP3s and documents. It seems that the company is emphasising photo backup only because it believes that’s where the market is and also because of the legal implications of being host to illegal or copyright protected content.
